• hello~ it's been a long long time...
just wondering, if i were to keep updating this thing, who would read it?
please leave a message if you would...
or should we lay xanga to rest?

    doing well in osaka ^_^
  • UCLA Fight Fight Fight~!

Thanks to an awesome Thanksgiving Day game against Arizona State, USC is back at number 2~!
    44-24: A day of giving thanks... ^_^

I'll be cheering for UCLA for the first time ever cuz...
If UCLA beats Oregon tomorrow, Oregon will be off our backs and out of the running for Conference Title...

THEN, when we destroy the Bruins on the December 1st... (see you at the Coliseum) >_<
We can claim our 6th consecutive Conference Title~! ^_^
(...though we had to put away the National Championship this year... -_-;;) ?????

    Anyway... Go Bruins~! ^_^
    UCLA Fight Fight Fight~!
  • I MiSS...

to be perfectly honest... while i DO miss people in CA very much, i think all the constant activity and just the awesomeness of being in Japan, are keeping me from really really feeling like 'dang..... i wanna go home'. (in fact i dont really wanna go home at all... hehe~ although, that's not to say that I dont miss everyone... gah~ you know what i mean!) ^_^

ANYWAYYYYY.... point is, while i dont really miss people or places that much...
im having major cravings for the following foods these days:

    *** CHIPOTLE: steak burrito bowl
*** EL CHOLO: steak fajitas w/ flour tortillas + pina colada (that everyone jacks from me cuz they're too cheap to just try their own...) ^_^
    - WAHOO'S: polynesian shrimp quesedillas
    - ROUND TABLE PIZZA: doesn't really matter what kind... just some kinda awesome crusted, american pizza
    - LE DIPLOMAT: garlic chicken sandwich w/ siracha sauce
    - DDUK BO SSAM: at whatever yummy place in K-Town
    - XIAO LONG BAO: (soupy dumplings i guess...keke) at the place near Santa Anita
    - SOONDOOBU: at the place next to Berendo
    - ROBEKS: big wednesday (some real fruit...)
    - CORNER BAKERY: broccoli chedder soup with baguette + fugi apple salad
    - MOM'S COOKING: enough said...

obviously... no Japanese food anywhere on that list...
and mostly, i really just need to eat some good mexican food right now...
apparently there's a place in Umeda that's run by a Mexican couple...
it's probably super sanitary and bite-sized like everything else here... suspicious
i may go check it out though... stay tuned for updates. hehe

people please... for my sake, endulge in what's available to you.... and then try not to tell me about it.

  • TODAY WAS A BUSY DAY:

    my eyelids are heavy. -_-
stayed up late preparing for ELT (English Lunch Time) last night
supposed to be on campus by 9:00am, but woke up at 8:50am... >_<
got ready and raced out of the house- getting to school at 9:20am... not TOO bad... hehe
was supposed to go to STiNT Orientation meeting today at 10:00am but...
    couldn't because i had to teach ELT@12:00pm
    had morning prayer...
    bible study with a student...
    team meeting...
    and ELT...
immediately afterwards, flew to the monorail station (on my bike)
and joined the other stinters for our orientation
(nearly a month late cuz we were waiting for the new korean stinters ^_^)
had a late lunch break, then continued on with our meeting until about 5:30pm where...
we finished for the day and headed over to the brothers stint house for...
dinner with: new STiNTers + our 4 foreign exchange students from korea (awesome kids)
made okonomiyaki at home and then began a 3 hour 'getting to know each other better' game
    11:30pm now... just got home...
    gonna study some japanese now...
    have quiet time...
    and go to sleep because...
    today was a busy day.
  • I wrote a letter to Haagen Dazs a few days ago, asking them to please consider bringing my Crispy Sandwiches to America... They replied today~!! HAHA~ It went something like this:

    __________________________________

    "Dear Haagen Dazs,
I'm a big fan of the Crispy Sandwiches sold in Japan and Korea. As a resident of California however, I'm saddened each time I return home to find that there are no Crispy Sandwiches in the States. Would the market be unreceptive...? I think I could eat a fair share of them myself if I was only given the chance. I hope you will consider bringing them to America in the near future. Thank you so much for your time. Sincerely, Jennifer Choi"

  • Stunned... over USC's loss this weekend...
How could such a thing happen...?
Defeated on our own turf for the first time since 2001 (even then, by Stanford ironically)
    In mourning for my people...

(And the saddest part is that nobody out here gets it. hehe)
I wonder if anybody else in Japan is sobbing over the news at this very moment...

    *sigh*
    Fight on Trojans...
  • Monday was my first official day of school~ ^_^ proud to be a... person that eats lunch, teaches english, and evangelizes... at Osaka University. [on a side note, i was curious to see what ranking Osaka University was at... and i found that in a global 'TOP 100 UNIVERSITIES' list: University of Southern California is #54 and Osaka University is #57. hehe pretty close ^_^ i dunno about this list though... UCLA beats out UPenn, Princeton, Duke, and Cornell??? highly suspicious -_-... haha~] Anyway, according to Japanese ranking, Osaka University (aka: Handai) sits at #4 overall. You can definitely feel the nerdly academic vibe here...oozing out of its cold concrete walls. Most of the classrooms and buildings look like factories compared to nearby Kansai University (private school, prettier campus, reputation for being much more slackerish) ^_^ [AH~ Geniechan: I met Ottasan today ^_^ i'm positive she misses you as much as you miss her... i told her i had heard much about her. when i get better at japanese, i hope to spend time with her too]

REUNITED: with my favourite icecream! why don't they have these in the states... would the market be less receptive? i think i could eat a fair share of them myself if they would just give me a chance.

    IMG_5448

ANYWAYS... this is kind of tricky... with my first newsletter coming out this week, i'm wondering what i should write about here on xanga... don't want my newsletter to be repeats of my xanga entries.

it takes 983 steps to get from Shibahara Monorail Station to my front door. The reason I know this is because I wore boots to church this past Sunday... and then decided to walk mebbe 2 miles (3.21km) to Tokyu Hands (a store that i love- however all i bought that day was stupid plastic grass to put in my/roommates bento boxes -_-) and by the time i took the train to the monorail station, and the monorail to my house... i wanted to purchase new feet... or crawl home. the only way i could distract myself from the pain was count how many steps it took to get to my door. >_< so there we have it. future residents of Toneyama House... 983.

SAIKIN, UCHI NO EIGO YABAIWA... (these days, my english sucks) and who can blame my 'Made in America' brain... i think in a given day, i use about 10% english, 30% japanese, and 60% korean... i think this will change when i get a little better at japanese but... for now, there are many more korean and japanese speakers around me than (confident) english speakers. i think my brain has compartmentalized itself (...that's a word right?) into these three languages. when the Japanese door is open for example (and when im listening intently), i can understand a majority of what people are saying... BUT!!! there are days like yesterday's weekly STiNT/STAFF meeting where i had our leader in front of me speaking in Japanese, another man to the left of me translating in Korean, and everyone praying LOUDLY in whatever language they were feeling that day... all three doors slammed shut and i had to leave the room. hehe brain overload. it's easy enough to space out when someone's lecturing or speaking in english, but i found that it's way easier when you've got 3 languages going at once. hehe~

The rest of the afternoon was a blessing and lots of fun. I'm learning much about God's global heart during STiNT. We spent a good hour praying for the pages and pages of prayer requests and thanksgivings that came in from Africa yesterday. It's amazing what God is doing in these countries. Wish I could tell you all about it... but um.. i can't remember everything to be perfectly honest. Luckily God does and... theres always Google... -_-;; Good luck everyone~

KEITAI ABUNAIWA: (cell phones are dangerous) twice already, i've walked straight into a pole/column while emailing on my phone... and one time, caught myself just as i was about to. >_<

Think that's just about it for now. My September Newsletter will be going out before the end of this week. If you would like to be added to the list, please drop me a line~ I'd love to share more about everything God is doing in this strange place called Japan. Matane~~ ^_^//

  • I  OSAKA:

ah... but before i get into the update, just thought id post this up to jahlang heh my brother... oniichan chwego~! ^_^ ill take you on a tour through all the goodies (mostly from our childhood) he got me at the aiport last week:

    IMG_5307

    1. Tabasco (necessary for all mission trips)

    2. Keebler EL Fudge Cookies (original flavour)

    3. a card entitled: "Sister Choi" (the best part ^_^) thank you oppa~

    4. Toblerone (i wonder what the big deal is about Toblerone anyway...)

    5. Mother's Cookies (english tea!!! my favourite childhood cookie)

    6. Butternut Squash Babyfood (can only be appreciated by true F.R.I.E.N.D.S superfans- Squatternut Bosh)

    7. Gerber Chicken Sticks (exposed: i still love these... much healthier than Vienna fake sausages, yet still so tasty)

    8. First Aid Kit (i already used to the gauze... see below for reason)

myTEAMMATES: lily (kangaku), sooyun (kandai, gaidai), and jenn (handai)

    IMG_5298

    Osaka University (aka: Handai)
Osaka University- Foreign Language Studies (aka: Gaidai)
    Kansai University (aka: Kandai)
    Kansai Gakuin University (aka: Kangaku)

Ah~ my first week in Osaka went by in a...very brisk jog... and I have a feeling the upcoming year will be the same... Hrm the past few days have been pretty uneventful. The fall semester for most of these students started this past Friday, but since our regular ministry and english/korean classes won't be starting until next week, it's been pretty chill. I spent most of last week just getting organized and settling into my new home ^_^

myROOM: tatami mats, futon, sliding door into my lovely roommate's room, tiny tiny desk, bookcase with all kinds of books including (yes) the GREs... [have to learn english on top of trying to figure out japanese], snacks (of course), dresser, and a fan (that we had on 24 hours a day but TODAY!!!! our AC is finally fixed!!! horay~!!)

    IMG_5386

myROOM2: the other side of my room ^_^ kekeke~ this is where i like to sit and think about how cool jack sparrow is... hehe just kidding. (i can just hear jason cheung now: "don't lust") hehe~ anyway... every one of those pictures has a story and a testimony i think... i hope i can share those stories with new friends and esp. non-christian students when they come over~ ^_^

    IMG_5388

myROOMMATE: this is yeonkyung... in one word, she is a 'unique' person. ^_^ originally from 을산 (near Busan), when she's excited or family from korea calls- her heavy heavy native accent comes pouring out. hehe~ she's incredibly gifted at creating a warm/welcoming environment (even if it's at her own expense) ^_^ everyday with her is like watching an episode of some anime... she has an obvious kind of love for the japanese students that enourages me to be the same. she's loud and crazy, so easy to get along with, and again... kinda crazy. hehe 연경아~사랑해! This is my lovely roommate- who has found a solution to Japan's tiny tiny products: hehehe~

    IMG_5355

aside from the fairly relaxing week, my second day in japan- i was getting a ride home on a motorcycle when my leg accidently touched the muffler. must have been mebbe half a second before i pulled it off. at the time (and even that night) it was just a discoloured circular area on my leg but in the morning..... >_< it looked something like this... [that would be a blister...] of course, i had to go the hospital the next day where they (details censored) and learned that it'll prolly be noticably yucky for at least one year... -_- *sigh* girls can understand this 'sigh' a little better than guys huh? -_- it's very sad... TURN AWAY IF YOURE EASILY GROSSED OUT!!!

    IMG_5326_2

met up with several old friends already and met many news ones. it's been really great to see them again. hasn't quite sunken in yet, that they're all just a phone call away. ^_^ ????? ive noticed that in a regular conversation here, most of the people involved can speak and understand a decent amount of all three languages: japanese, english, and korean. it's tough on the brain sometimes but it's pretty amazing to see all kinds of people speaking in different languages. where would i be without this dictionary? this is me trying to figure out what's inside the 20 different kinds of omelettes they had at this restaraunt.

    IMG_5329

lastly, from Sunday to Monday (last night) the staff, stinters, and several christian students from each of our 4 campuses had a 2 day Prayer Camp where (personally) God restored my purpose, expectations, and heart for this year. I must admit that in the midst of last goodbyes and preparation for this trip, I had lost focus on the bigger picture. While I was stressing about how to 'fix' this dried up feeling, God reminded me through John 15:5 that all I needed to do was simply 'remain' in Him and HE would bear the fruit through me.

    IMG_5365

the weather was awesome today... it's been a sauna since I arrived last week but after some rain yesterday, it was very breezy and... crisp? =^_^= ah~ how i miss california weather. i hear it's gonna start getting colder in about a week... friends here have been telling me (california girl) that i might just die from cold (japanese) winter. >_< we'll see how it goes~ hehe ?????????????

my team in front of Kandai's new park (so pretty~!)

    IMG_5348

  • LeAVING ON A JeTPLANe:

so kiss me and smile for me
tell me that you'll wait for me
hold me like you'll never let me go
CAUSE IM LEAVING ON A JET PLANE
I DON'T KNOW WHEN I'LL BE BACK AGAIN
oh babe i hate to go
    ___________________________________

hehe... okay the rest of the song doesn't really apply, but anyway... I'll be leaving on a jet plane this Sunday and i think i'll be back sooner than i realize. I hope nobody went to the airport on Tuesday night... Spent (what i thought was) my last week at home in NorCaL- catching up with friends, packing packing, and of course spending time with family.

haven't been very good about updating this thing in the past few months. stay tuned for more thoughtful entries and updates from japan in a few days. in the meantime...

    FUN IN NORCAL:

drove around (...was driven around) in a Corvette for the first time ever. i concluded that 'nice-car drivers' must have really great head inflation all throughout the day. something about watching people drive by your car with a 'oooooooh' expression on their face, does wonderful things for the ego. haha~ it was nice for one night anyway

    had cheeseburgers for lunch...

rode on a really small trolley...

    hung out with Garfield...

    FUN IN SOCAL:

walking around campus a few days ago, and i saw this~ i smiled... ^_^ proud of my brothers and sisters, proud of my ministry... proud that we got a space on the benches!

tried to tell lesley not to pull out Doheny Library's palm tree...

took a picture with Tommy Trojan...

    hijacked DPS's chariot...

made tissue socks to wear with my RENTED bowling shoes... -_-

and finally, played games at a cafe with my usc brothers and sisters

there's a good chance that my next entry will be coming to you from Japan~ Please keep my in your prayers as I wrap up last minute details here in CA~ See you at the airport [SUNDAY 09/16- 9:00pm]~!!
